Note: Once installed, you should enable wireless security for your Symantec Gateway Security 802.11b/g WLAN Access Point Add-On. Symantec provides maximum security with its VPN secured wireless technology, but at the very least, you should enable wireless encryption protocol (WEP). Failure to enable wireless security leaves your network at risk for intrusion. See the Symantec Gateway Security 300 Series Administrator’s Guide. Product features The following section describes the features of the Symantec Gateway Security 300 Series WLAN Access Point Add-On. Wireless LAN Access Point Hardware Add-On For small businesses that want to support mobile workers, the wireless LAN Access Point (WLAN AP) hardware add-On saves significant expense by eliminating a separate WLAN device, which can cost more and require significant management overhead. The WLAN crossgrade transforms the unit into a combination WLAN AP and integrated security gateway. Integrated wireless option slot All models include a CardBus slot that provides high-speed access for a Symantec-provided Wireless LAN Access Point hardware add-On. 802.11b/g and mixed wireless LAN support Supports interoperable standards compatible with leading wireless mobility platforms for 802.11b and 802.11g. The appliance also supports WLAN networks with mixed 802.11b and 802.11g clients. The PCI-bus system connection provides performance for the support of additional 802.11 standards Treats wireless link as an untrusted port Protects internal WLANs from susceptibility to drive-by “war-driving” and other vulnerabilities inherent to the WLAN medium. Multiple wireless encryption options Provides the ultimate security for WLAN links, IPsec-based encryption for data privacy and integrity. Additional options include WEP-based encryption for compatibility with less robust WLAN solutions. Symantec Client VPN The same VPN Client software can be used for protecting users whether they are on a WLAN or connecting to the gateway remotely while traveling. When VPN mode is set, only traffic authenticated for VPN is allowed through the WLAN port. Roaming For small businesses that will implement their WLAN as an overlay to their wired LAN, deployment of numerous wireless access points allows them to get full radio coverage for their building. Roaming allows users to establish a VPN tunnel at any Symantec Gateway Security appliance, and then move around the facility without having to reestablish their tunnels.
