Quick Start Guide This guide provides first-time users with information on taking photographs with the D80, on copying photographs to a computer, and printing photographs. Complete information on using your Nikon digital camera can be found in the Nikon Guide to Digital Photography with the D80 and the PictureProject reference manual (on CD). Setup

Turn the Camera On

Set the Focus-Mode Selector to “AF”

Choose a Language and Set the Clock

Ready the Camera

Attach the Strap

A language-selection dialog will be displayed the first time the camera is turned on. Follow the steps below to choose a language and set the camera clock.

Attach the Monitor Cover

To attach the cover, insert the projection on the top of the cover into the matching indentation above the camera monitor (!), and press the bottom of the cover until it clicks into place ("). Select language.

Confirm that the package contains the items listed below. Purchasers of the lens kit option should confirm that the package also includes a lens. Memory cards are not provided; please use one of the memory cards listed on page 122 of the Guide to Digital Photography.

Attach a Lens Select local time zone.

Care should be taken to prevent dust from entering the camera when the lens or body cap is removed.

Frame a Photograph

Display Daylight saving time options. Highlight On if daylight saving time is in effect.

Frame a photo in the viewfinder with the main subject positioned in any of the eleven focus areas.

Lens mounting index

Keeping the mounting index on the lens aligned with the mounting index on the camera body, position the lens in the camera’s bayonet mount and rotate the lens in the direction shown until it clicks into place.

D80 camera

Charge the Battery

Set clock and return to shooting mode. Monitor will turn off automatically.

To change the order in which the year, month, and day are displayed, select World time > Date format from the setup menu (see page 103 of the Guide to Digital Photography).

Zoom out

Format the Memory Card To format the card, turn the camera on and hold the ( and ) buttons down simultaneously for approximately two seconds. A blinking will appear in the shutterspeed display and the frame count will blink. Pressing both buttons together a second time will format the memory card. Press any other button to exit without formatting.

Focus and Shoot 1

About two and a quarter hours are required for an exhausted battery to fully charge.

When the focus operation is complete, the selected focus areas will be briefly highlighted, a beep will sound, and the in-focus indicator (●) will appear in the viewfinder. Focus will lock while the shutter-release button is pressed halfway.

During formatting, the letters will appear in the frame-count display. When formatting is complete, the frame-count display will show the number of photographs that can be recorded at current settings. • Formatting memory cards permanently deletes any data they may contain. Be sure to copy any photographs and other data you wish to keep to a computer before proceeding. • Do not remove the card or battery or unplug the AC adapter (available separately) during formatting.
